Loon Country Arts is More Than Just a Gallery

Gallery North: From Humble Beginnings to Loon Country Arts Collective

Founded in 1989, Gallery North has long been a cornerstone of Bemidji’s vibrant art scene, dedicated to showcasing the work of local and regional artists. The gallery was created by a small group of visionary artists within The Northern Artists Association who had a passion for providing a platform where local talent could flourish. Their goal was to build a space that would support the creative community, offering both emerging and established artists a venue to display and sell their work.

Located in the heart of downtown Bemidji, Gallery North quickly gained a reputation for its warm, welcoming atmosphere and its commitment to making art accessible to everyone. Over the years, the gallery expanded its offerings to include not just paintings, but also photography, sculpture, textiles, ceramics, jewelry, and more, all handcrafted by artists from northern Minnesota. One of the gallery’s hallmarks has been its emphasis on education and community involvement.

Throughout its history, Gallery North has hosted art classes, workshops, and demonstrations, fostering a deep connection between artists and the local community. Annual events, such as the "First Friday Art Walks," became beloved traditions, drawing art enthusiasts and visitors from across the region to experience the creativity on display. As a cooperative gallery, Gallery North was owned and operated by its member artists. This structure not only ensured that the gallery remained rooted in the community, but also allowed the artists to have a direct hand in the gallery’s operations and direction. Over the decades, this collective spirit was the driving force behind the gallery’s enduring success.

The Birth of Loon Country Arts Collective In 2023, Gallery North embraced an exciting new chapter in its history, evolving into what is now known as the Loon Country Arts Collective. This transformation was driven by a desire to expand the gallery’s vision and reach even more artists across the region. The new name reflects the gallery’s connection to the natural beauty of northern Minnesota, symbolized by the iconic loon, while also honoring its roots as a cooperative community of artists. While the name and scope have evolved, the core mission of the Loon Country Arts Collective remains the same: to celebrate and support local artistry.

Today, Loon Country Arts Collective continues the legacy started by Gallery North, serving as both a creative hub and a place of inspiration. With a focus on inclusivity and artistic growth, it remains a vital part of Bemidji’s cultural landscape, ensuring that the spirit of creativity thrives in the heart of Loon Country. With an eye on the future, the collective is working to expand its offerings and invite community members to become actively involved with its future.
